Number 3 is incorrect, the sun is 93 million miles away from the earth for starters.

@sumit singh Mythbusters folded a piece of paper 11 times http://www.nidokidos.org/threads/45971-MythBusters-Folding-Paper-Seven-plus-times

@the person who said #3 is incorrect. You are actually incorrect because Earth is not a star and it specifically said "between the stars".

Anonymous said...

Yo friends you will get amazing facebook facts from http://www.orangetooth.webege.com try it.

Anonymous said...

@ the person who said #3 could be correct... If you do any sort of research on astronomy, you'll find that the sun is the only star in our solar system. This would make it impossible for another star to be a mere 20 million miles away considering earth is 93 million miles away from the sun. Also, look up the term "goldilocks zone" in astronomy. This term is used to describe our distance from the sun; not too hot, not too cold. If the average distance between stars was 20 million miles, our orbit around the sun would be much closer than the perfect 93 million miles away we are at present, which would result in a furnace-like, uninhabitable planet. #3 is far from correct, and things aren't looking good for #4 either. TTHE SUN IS THE CLOSEST STAR TO EARTH! We've already sent probes much further than this, past the outer gas giants and toward the outskirts of our solar system. If you're going to post "facts" or comment on the credibility of postings, please do a small amount of research and try to be correct! My furthest level of education is a diploma and I can figure this stuff out!

Dr.Hafiz Muhammad Aeymon said...

It says average distance between stars!!
And also we know that sun is a star but when we say star we don't mean sun. It means (not technically speaking) the stars we see at night....

Anonymous said...

Ok, so what you actually mean is the average distance between the observable stars in the night sky is 20 million miles apart, which would most likely be referring to the stars in our galaxy. So the average distance between stars in the Milky Way is 20 million miles? Try again. I've read from several credible sources (boojum.as.arizona.edu being one, the U of A website) that the average distance between stars in the Milky Way is closer to something like five light years, which at 6 TRILLION miles per light year, is more like 30 trillion miles between stars. And also, if you know the sun is the closest star, maybe you (or whoever posted this stuff) should be more specific. Saying something like "other than the sun, the closest star to earth..." would easily rectify any confusion here. Like I said, all it takes (for the most part) is a little research to distinguish fact from fiction. One more thing, Alpha Centauri, the closest star to our sun, is 4.2 light years away, or about 25 trillion miles. And the average distance between stars is 20 million miles? Just wondering how that's possible... If I'm wrong I'll gladly admit it but, as I have done, I'd like you to give me something to take other than your word for it...

Anonymous said...

Oh yes, and even binary star systems are more often than not more than 20 million miles apart. Too many holes my friend...

Anonymous said...

hmm the closest star to d sun is proxima centauri...its 4.24 light yrs from d sun ie 27000 times that of the distance between earth and sun...

So many of these "facts" are wrong. Here's some examples, business.com is the fifth most expensive domain name. It was the most expensive in 1999. insure.com was sold for $16 million. That was as of 2009, so even this possibly outdated information disproves it.

Aang is Aleut (eskimo language) for hello. Also, the many words for snow applies to many of their words. This also applies to countries like sweden. It is a quirk of grammar.

There are many other errors, that I don't feel like looking up sources for.

As for those additional facts Sumit Singh posted...

The word googol doesn't really mean "1 followed by 100 zeroes", that is just what it is. The word has no other meaning than the number itself. It was a made up word.

Although it may seem that your heart takes a break during a sneeze, this is actually not the case. When you first inhale before sneezing, the pressure in your chest increases. Then, as you exhale forcefully during the sneeze the pressure drops. Alterations in blood flow to your heart produced by these pressure changes can affect the heart rate. However, the electrical activity in the heart marches on unimpeded–you remain very much alive throughout your sneeze!

Anonymous said...

That's why it says 'the average'

Anonymous said...

"The word googol doesn't really mean "1 followed by 100 zeroes", that is just what it is. The word has no other meaning than the number itself. It was a made up word"... the reason why you couldnt find the definition for GOOGLE is because you spelled it wrong. the search engine was named after the number...

Fscts. Only net noobs and the retarded (related) would take this rubbish and think it was fact. That Sumit Singh added more rubbish speaks volumes about his intellect and mental state. Might be because he is Indian and therefore an arrogant, ill-informed fool. Might not be though. Could be the same idiot from Bangladesh or Pakistan, same thing really.

Anonymous said...

google is 1 follwed by 100 zeros you retard, haha gtf mate!

Anonymous said...

Although previous comments have probably clarified this, #3 is definitely incorrect as 20 million miles of travel wouldn't even get you to Mars, so how could it be the average distance between stars if it wouldn't even get us out of our own solar system?

Anonymous said...

Very good facts. I love these!

Anonymous said...

ok....you're all smart..just shut up!!!

Anonymous said...

Perhaps he meant to say average of 20 trillion miles? I don't know, but isn't that almost equal to the quoted five lightyears between whichever stars the angry "smart" guy mentioned?

Unknown said...

Stars toward the centre of a galaxy are more densely spread and closer together. We're on the edge of a spiral arm and on the outside of the galaxy, that's why the distance is MUCH greater than 20 million miles here, but there are also generally more stars in the centre of a galaxy than the outskirts, which would explain the AVERAGE of 20 million miles

Tushar Ugale...1 light year = 5.88 million million million miles...would's traveling at the speed of light for 1 year)
Proxima centauri (our nearest star from the sun) is 4.3 light years away...4.3 x 5.88 million million million... If the average was 93 million miles then
A) we wouldnt need the light year as a measurement of distance and
B) the gravitational pull on all the stars would be so powerful it wpuld cause a cataclysmic event.

Anonymous said...

Dr.Hafiz Muhammad Aeymon if that was the average distance between stars then the stars would engulf one another. The RADIUS of the sun alone is almost half a million miles. How the hell did you become a doctor? This is easily found online. I can categorically state that there are NO stars that close and harbouring planets. Any star that tries to form 20 million miles from an already established star will just be turned to dust and engulfed. You would have to travel 8 minutes at the lightspeed to reach our sun. The nearest star other than the sun is 4.3 YEARS at lightspeed. FFS EARTHS ORBIT AROUND THE SUN IS ALMOST 200 MILLION MILES so there's on average 10 stars between earth and the sun? haha.

Anonymous said...

Any star 20 million miles from another will be engulfed by the bigger star. Our sun radius is almost half a million miles long and it's far from the biggest star we know of. There is absolutely no chance of 2 stars being that close unless they were the size of earth and they would almost be impossible to detect. Average or not there is absolutely no way they can be that close. Also to include the sheer distances of the galaxies that can be seen in our sky, the other stars must be really really really close in order to bring this distance down to an average of 20 million miles. This stuff is EASILY researched. Why can't people understand that 20 million miles in space is miniscule. The earths orbit is almost 200 MILLION miles

Number for is incorrect.
The closest star to earth is the sun, which is 1 au.
Mars at its closest approach to earth is .5 au.
That would take 150 to 300 days to reach from a spacecraft, so after about a half of year toward the sun it would rapidly change to 69,500 years left?

Unknown said...

*number 4
69,999.5 years

#3 is nonsense.
the distance between the earth and sun(star) is 93 million miles.
The next closest star to the sun is 11 au now multiply that by 93 million.
